Kudumbigala Monastery is an ancient Buddhist monastery belonging to world history which dates back to 246 B.C. Ampara District, in the Eastern Province of Sri Lanka, set under the patronage of King Devanampiyatissa, has been transformed into a residence for monks to dwell much away from the buzzing noise of cities to seek solitude and meditate. The monastery is nicely located among dense jungles, surrounded by giant boulders and rugged surfaces.

Within the monastery grounds, over 200 rock caves are available. It was here that the monks would pursue their hermitic life. Maha Sudharshana Lena, with its shining Brahmi inscriptions, is one of the more famous caves found here. It increases the historical import of this cave because it was excavated and given to the Arhats by Giant Warrior Nandimitra, one of the ten giant warriors of King Dutugemunu. The major uniqueness of this Kudumbigala monastery is that it houses a cylindrical stupa, the only one in Sri Lanka, standing a silent testament to the bygone builders' architectural ingenuity.

Visitors to the Kudumbigala Monastery can take a short descent into the mountains where they cross many caves, most of which are still intact and instead breathtaking views from atop the rock are afforded. Truly, this is a passage into peace, culture, and religious heritage of Sri Lanka.

It is famous for several Asian elephants grazing at the shores of the tank. Other animals include leopards, sloth bears and deer, and both kinds of endemic and migratory birds, which can be viewed in the park. It has a very rich kind of vegetation: dry evergreen forests, grasslands, and wetlands, providing varied habitat for the resident fauna.
